Mackerel Feathers
When to use: Mackerel feathers are highly effective for catching mackerel around the UK coastline, especially during the summer months when large shoals move inshore. Use them from piers, harbour walls, or rock marks where mackerel chase baitfish near the surface. Early mornings and evenings often produce the best results. Cast out and retrieve steadily or jig vertically to mimic small fish. Mackerel feathers can also pick up pollack and bass in deeper water. Choose calmer, clear conditions for the most success. They are popular in areas like the South West, Wales, and North East coasts when targeting fresh bait or table fish.
Recommended tackle:
- Fixed spool reel or multiplier reel – loaded with 20–30lb monofilament or braid.
- 3–12oz lead weight – varies depending on whether you are boat or shore fishing.
- Swivels – help reduce line twist from spinning mackerel.
- American snaps – also called quick-release clips, ideal for fast rig changes.
- Landing net or gaff – especially useful when fishing from piers, harbour walls, or rocks.
